Physical dependence Vs Psychological Dependence to Substance

Physical Dependence

Withdrawal symptoms in the absence of the drug

Tolerance to its effects with repeated use

Psychological Dependence

“a relatively extreme, pathological state in which obtaining, taking, and recovering from a drug represents a loss of behavioral control over drug taking which occurs at the expense of most other activities and despite adverse consequences” (Altman et al)

“a situation where drug procurement and administration appear to govern the organism’s behavior, and where the drug seems to dominate the organism’s motivational hierarchy” (Bozarth)

  • The Symptoms associated with the psychological components of addictive behaviors or with psychological dependence are :
  • Cravings
    • Includes abnormal urge to take the alcohol or drug
  • Issues with anxiety that occur when someone tries to stop their addictive behavior
    • Eg one might feel very restless and sweating and gets irritated towards the people who comments on them
  • Issues with depression when one is not using their drug of choice or tries to stop their addictive behavior
    • Easily they gets into mood swings and sad
  • Irritability and restlessness that occur when someone is not using their drug of choice or trying to quit
    • When close friends quit drinking or changes the choice of drugs
  • Any other issues with mood swings that occur when one is not using their substance of choice or attempting to quit
  • Appetite loss or increased appetite associated with not using the substance of choice
    • either they will stay two or more days without food or eat with a ravenous hunger
  • Issues with sleep associated with quitting or not using the drug of choice
  • Issues with uncertainty about being able to stop using the substance of choice
  • Denial that one has a substance use issue or romanticizing one’s substance use/abuse
    • they never accepts their dependency state or they feel proud saying they are good drinkers
  • Obsessing over obtaining or using the drug of choice
  • Cognitive issues, such as issues with concentration, memory, problem-solving, and other aspects of judgment, etc.
    • Now this has to take into serious consideration. Because it can even affect students with degrading marks in college, soft ware dudes loosing concentration and difficult to concentrate on their jobs and other issues in personal relationship with others

The management of drug addiction includes both Medicinal approach as well as psychological interventions. Must require helping hands of psychologist for the mental instability issues and behavioural issues to the interpersonal relationships.

Say No to Drugs.......!
